Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 Info & Speculation

Batman: Arkham City Logo

…or rather Batman: Arkham City. The second instalment of the fantastical Batman game from the boys at Rocksteady Studios has been given the official title of Batman: Arkham City (as announced on the DC blog) and promises to build on the sheer awesomeness of the first game.

I know what you’re thinking. How’s that even possible? How can this game possibly be more awesome that Batman: Arkham Asylum?

More Details Released

Now that Rocksteady Studio’s have announced the game will be released in Fall 2011, details on the game are emerging every day, but the title suggests a bigger area for Batman to deal his swift justice and as the mouth-watering art concepts for the game found @ Game Informer below suggests, Catwoman will definitely play a big part in this sequel. And there’s much more!

According to this article over @ IGN:

The story for Arkham City takes place one year after the events of Arkham Asylum. The warden from the first game, Quincy Sharp, is now mayor of Gotham City, and he purchased a large portion of the city’s slums to build a new criminal facility. “Arkham City,” as it is called, houses all the insane prisoners previously found on the asylum before Joker left it in ruins. Psychiatrist Hugo Strange is now heading the new facility, and the only rule the prisoners are given is not to escape, leaving them to fend for themselves inside the guarded walls within the city.

IGN go on to confirm that Joker and Two-Face will be the main villains in the new game, both respective gang leaders looking to cause chaos throughout this new city.

It has also confirms that Catwoman will in fact play a big part in the storyline, teaming up with Batman throughout the narrative of the game and typical with the comic book Batman/Catwoman saga, she play Batman’s love interest whilst at the same time her motives remain cloudy at best and there is some question whether she’s ultimately Batman’s friend or foe.

As for game play and other aspects of Batman: Arkham City, IGN have confirmed there will be more riddles, gadgets and action sequences:

Most of Batman’s weapons and gadgets from the first game will return for the sequel, and he’ll actually start the game with them all. Those weapons can receive further upgrades. New gadgets include a Bat Claw that can fetch items too far away and a broadcast analyzer to track transmissions.

The combat will also see several new additions, including simultaneous counters, gadget incorporation (such as spraying explosive gel on enemies), and projectile counters from inmates that throw things at you from afar.

Arkham City will have many side-quests involving key characters, harder, more advanced Riddler trophies that involve puzzle solving, and more varied enemy types.

Immediate Reaction

The immediate reaction from we @ GeekZenith is: FUCKING WOW! The storyline sounds all kinds of awesome, with Two-Face and Joker going against each other in a potential gang war and combined with the suspected team up with Catwoman in the narrative this thing could easily top Arkham Asylum – which isn’t something that’s easily done.

And it’s not just the storyline updates we’re overjoyed about. More gadgets to play with and the potential ability to spray explosive gel and blow enemies up? YES PLEASE.

The worst thing about this? We have to wait another YEAR before it’s released. I truthfully haven’t this excited for a video game since forever and I simply can’t wait to experience sheer digitalised awesomeness.

More Questions

Typically, this further information has thrown everything up in the air and inevitably raised more questions than it answers. The things burning at the back of my mind are: what’s Scarecrow’s role in all of this? Or the Titan formula? At the end of Arkham Asylum we see the Scarecrow clutch onto the box of Titan. Will more supervillains be divided up between the gangs? Who else will be involved? Will there be more fights with genuine supervillains or will we be still basically limited to the thugs and what not?

But the main question is: why is the release date soooo long away? It’s true, you can’t rush awesomeness, but I was hoping they’d hurry it along some!

The hand of the villain clutching onto the box of Titan was random.
