You may have noted the question marks in the title. They are there for a very big reason, believe me. Why? Because even I have a hard time digesting this latest piece of Avengers movie gossip.
I would say spoilers, but I’m not convinced they are. I believe them to be wild, but VERY interesting on a major geekage level, rumours so make of that what you will and enter at your own risk.
Has you may have already heard, the new Avengers movie is already set to have a plethora of formidable villains for the team to contend with: Loki, Red Skull and the Skrulls, yet the rumours leaking today suggest there is one more name to add to the list…and you’re not going to believe who the hell it is.
Yep. That’s right it’s Thanos, the Mad Titan. For those of you who aren’t aware of thanos:
The character first appeared in Iron Man #55 (Feb. 1973) and was created by writer-artist Jim Starlin.
Debuting in the Bronze Age of comic books, the character has featured in over three decades of Marvel continuity and a self-titled series. The character’s name is a derivation of Thanatos, the personification of death and mortality in Greek mythology. One of his more prominent storylines to date—the Infinity Gauntlet series—portrayed him as a mad cosmic tyrant bent on slaying half of all sentiences existing then in Marvel’s multiverse in order to appease the Marvel Universe’s actual (and more powerful) embodied personification of Death in an attempt to win its love.
To some, that may not be breaking news. After all, the Infinity Gauntlet was actually revealed at the San Diego Comic Con back in July last year which lead to initial speculations at the time of Thanos’ involvement somewhere in the Marvel movie universe. The guantlet did briefly show up in the Odin’s Vault in the Thor movie, which seemed to put the rumours to rest. Yesterday, however, the rumours reignited at Latino Review where they claimed Thanos was definitely going to be another villain to add to the already impressive roster.
No further details were provided to substantiate the rumour in any way, however, with the Infinity Gauntlet breadcrumbs left throughout the movie universe it’s hard to dismiss has a possibility.
As to what role the villain will play if he is actually in the movie, it’s hard to say. I hardly think the movie needs another villain in the mix, with everything they’ve already on the plate at the moment. Despite my fondness for the Thanos character, I think an extra villain will divert the audience attention away from the storyline more than the calvacade of stars already is, however, I would very much be open to the idea of Thanos making a small cameo at the end of the movie to set up a possible storyline for sequel.
What do you guys think? Does this seem feasible? How do you think Thanos would fit into the Avengers movie? Or do you doubt that he’s going to be involved at all? Please let me know in the comment section below!
If you’re unfamiliar with Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, then I heartily recommend you pick up the Infinity Gauntlet Graphic Novel (just 6.49) or if you’re reading this in the UK, you can pick it up for £16.61.
