Back in January, when it was announced that Andy Whitfield was pulling out of the second season of Spartacus (or third season, considering Gods of the Arena) due his cancer returned and was to be replaced by relative newcomer Liam McIntyre, I had mixed feelings. Obviously, Andy had to make the right decision for him and take care of himself – that’s a given. I had mixed feelings on whether the show should continue or not.
Although it’s clear there’s still the rest of the Spartacus story to tell and boy, what a story it is, but on the other hand nobody likes shows who replace the lead actor with another actor. Okay, with this one there was a more than valid reason but still they don’t tend to do well.
But should it matter all that much with a show like Spartacus?
Honestly, that was my main concern. Spartacus: Blood and Sand was one hell of a show, but I felt it was just as much about the other characters, the setting and the time period as much as Spartacus himself. Sure, his story was the main focal point of the show but I believed the story was rich with history, Roman politics and the brutal life of a gladiator which could sometimes over shadow the main character and rightfully so.
If the series can keep true to that and if Whitfields replacement, Liam McIntyre, can bring the same passion and fire to the role as his predecessor then we’ve still got a great TV show on our screens.
Now take a look at the Spartacus: Vengeance teaser trailer and let me know what you think. Will you be watching the show?
Spartacus: Vengeance will air late January 2012 and I for one cannot wait…what about you?
