Earlier this year, when it was reported that Laurence Fishbourne had decided to leave hit TV show CSI after two and a half seasons my first reaction was: “Laurence Fishbourne was in CSI???” but that was primarily because I’m not a big CSI fan.
I know the show is a big thing for a lot of people, but it wqas just never my thing. Nevertheless, I thought they did well casting such a talented and high-profile actor but I guess, without wanting to throw too many accusations around, there’s quite a bit of money behind the show in order to make such a tempting offer.
Now though, he’s moved onto bigger a better things. Now he gets to play a cult comic book character in the new Superman movie, ‘Man of Steel’. This casting may be a somewhat controversial choice as the character has been portrayed in other Superman projects and comic books as a white American.
Whilst the casting of Fishbourne is a great choice (IMO at least), comic book and movies connoisseur’s alike are all a little wary of the new Superman project for a number of reasons. The major one being the recent Bryan Singer “Superman Returns” movie which was universally panned. I, personally, didn’t mind the movie too much as I look favourably upon a large portion of the cast (big fan of Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey till the end!) but I have to admit the movie didn’t stand out for me as much as some of the others.
The other point that gave fans pause for thought as the fact that the movie was delayed for 6 months for a long string of reason, which was primarily due to the fact that Warner Bros decided to bank on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (and rightfully so) which was set to be released in the same month (Dec 2012). The movie would also have stiff competition against Tarantino’s new western movie Django Unchained and the Lone Ranger.
Despite the negatives, I’m quitely looking forward to Superman: Man of Steel even if nobody else is. I think Zack Synder can do a good job – hopefully a good a job as he did on Watchmen (which remains one of my favourite movies of all time).
What do you think of this casting?
