Before Joseph Gordon-Levitt was even officially attached to The Dark Knight Rises, there was speculation regarding his role in the movie and that hasn’t stopped since, the latest coming just the other day as suggested by Comic Book Resource. At first it was the Riddler, then it was Robin, then Alberto Falcone, then Robin again.
And now? Find out right here!
I’m sure anyone who’s reading this article is more than familiar with the Batman story “Knightfall” which details the first appearance of Bane and how he “breaks the bat”. If not, I’ve pretty much summed up the story right there and judging from all the information we’ve seen (including the 10 minute intro trailer if you were lucky enough to catch it) suggests that the third installment of Christopher Nolan’s excellent Batman series will loosely be based on this storyline in a typically more modernised and realistic way.
In this story, Bane actually succeeds in defeating Batman, taking the caped crusader to his very limits and eventually breaking his spine. As a result, Bruce Wayne must recover from his injuries, but Batman must live on. Enter Jean-Paul Valley in his guise as Azrael. He takes on the mantle of the bat and he’s the character now linked with JGL’s assigned John Blake character in The Dark Knight Rises.
Officially, John Blake is supposed to be a “Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon” but given the weight of actor portraying the role, a lot of people are wondering whether is just a misdirection and this John Blake character has a bigger role to play than Nolan is letting on. On the other hand, I also think people are underestimating how big of a role a leading Gothan City police office plays in Nolan’s movies.
I guess there is a little bit more credibility in this rumour of JGL actually portraying a version of the Azrael (perhaps he will just take on the Batman mantle after Bane defeats Bruce Wayne cutting out all of the references to Azrael and the comic book characters background?) than some of the others, but then of course the rumour could just have credibility due to the storyline already attached to the movie?
I actually do think there is more to this John Blake character than meets the eye – what? I have no idea, but it sure will be interesting to find out!
What do you think? Will JGL will be playing Azrael or a Christopher Nolan version of him? Or will he just be playing a Gotham City beat cop? Please let me know what you think in the comments section below!
