The season split is never a good sign for a TV show and when the BBC announced that the latest season of Dr Who would be split people feared the worst. Rumours spread – it was inevitable.
Now showrunner Steven Moffat hits back at the claims…and he has some damn good points to make too! Check it out!
What did Moffat say? He told Richard Bacon on BBC5 Live Radio station: “It’s a huge money-spinner. It’s doing better than ever abroad – the global number of people watching Doctor Who has just gone up and up and up. It was the most downloaded show on American iTunes last year, so [there's] not a chance of the BBC giving up on Doctor Who.”
Reasonable point about the amount of money the show generates and a very definitive “this show ain’t gonna be cancelled” statement which at least puts my fears to rest!
In regards to why the show was split, he explains: “We’re just splitting it over Christmas, we’re making the same number of episodes as usual. We delayed it a few months to start it later in the year, that’s all that’s happened.”
What do you think? Does this alleviate your fears at all? Did you even have fears? Please let me know what you think about this in the comments below – I’d love to hear your opinion on the matter!

No way it gets cancelled. Doctor Who is almost one of the biggest shows in the world. So many people watch it. So many.
Um the BBC Has free ratings in the Olympic games. Why waste a big show like Doctor Who during that
Ya know – if the guy that makes the show says it ain’t being cancelled – my thoughts are to believe him.
Doctor Who cancelled? As if! They made that mistake once, it’s not like ly to happen again. Especially not when the show is doing well. I just hope they figure out a way to bypass the regeneration amount so that they can keep making more after that. That is the only thing that could cancel the show.
Cancelling that show would be just stupid. Im an american and that show brings my normally separated family into 1 room to watch it all together.Furthermore that show is a classic hit and its getting alot more attention from american consumers. Why cut of that major source of revenue and potentional profit. Its still a huge untouch revenue for in amercia.. id also like to say I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!!!!!!
I personally think that the show will celebebrate its 50th Anniversary and then end. Not axed…more like drifted to a natural conclusion. I don’t hink the Doctor will be killed off…I don’t think even the BBC would want the finality of that….it will left with a possible chance to come back…one day…just in case. That’s my theory. I hope I am wrong.
Exactly why is this news now? This was settled a year ago. Split seasons, despite what the writer claims, are commonplace now and are not a “bad sign”. US shows do it as a matter of policy for the most part. And in 2011 the season was split in order to emphasize the mid-season cliffhanger and it worked – plus the split was to allow the series to transition into a fall start which is known to create stronger ratings than a spring start (UK viewership seems to be really impacted by weather and the like – apparently Brits actually have a life and are known to not watch TV as much when the weather is nice – and I’m not talking out my tail – the BBC itself has given that reason for the odd weeks when DW ratings have slumped in the spring). In the case of Season 7, the season starts in September, runs 5 weeks, then there’s a break – like most shows do – which will be broken up by the Christmas special, and then in January or February the show will resume. The series is not in trouble. It is the BBC’s biggest cash cow and they’re already talking about the 50th anniversary special which isn’t going to even air until November of 2013 in the midst of the 8th season. Stop panicking.
One tends to lose interest when something is not on the television for a while. Many shows have taken a hiatus, and instead of returning for a full term, they end up getting cancelled after a few new episodes are shown. Had there been a teaser episode within January to July, it would have continued the interest with the series. Sigh: out of sight, slowly out of mind.
Who? Oh, a Doctor.
The new Dr. Who sucks; its moronic, shallow, cheap, infantile, and too full of itself. It’s attempt at being a comedy is pathetic. The old Dr. Who was a much better product and much more serious; it actually had some quality in terms writing and plot. Also, it was closer to a horror science fiction show with real suspense and thrills. The new series are childish pathetic soap operas with lots unbritish-like touchy feely emotionalism.
No wonder Britain gets weaker and weaker, imagine shows like dr. Who and its ilk sissifying our young boys by making their childhood role models shallow emotionally weak comedians (like the new drug addict like Dr. In tennis shoes). Or perhaps the weak plots and character development is yet another sign of British decline; despite British military power having collapsed in the early part of the 20th century (with Germany smashing the myth of our invincibility and the Indians permenently throwing us out of the subcontinent; India represented 80% of our empire’s real military and economic capacity [manpower & resources]), I always thought we’d still remain serious cultural power in the world, just look at our talent in film music and the arts. I mean even after our decline we remained a really powerful cultural force globally; despite both Germany being much more powerful than us in military and economic terms they’re midgets compared to Britain in term of global cultural influence (who really watches German or French stuff? Not even the French and Germans!)
I’m so sad to see that even here, in the media and arts, we’re declining. We’re no longer charting a high quality independent path, but rather, have opted for cheap American style low plot quality short term franchises.
I can’t wait for this New Dr. Who to eventually be cancelled it’s a national disgrace.
That’s a bit harsh, NewWhoNot!
What do the rest of you guys think?
You don’t understand. Moffat SAVED the show by turning it to crap. You see, the TV universe revolves around me. Yes, it ‘s true, but not in a good way. Every show I love gets cancelled before its time. Fortunately for others who love the same kind of shows, I watch TV only once in a great while. (Sorry, Firefly fans. I’ll always feel bad about that.)
A few short years ago, Netflix introduced me to Doctor Who. Russell T. Davies, realizing that I had fallen deeply in love with it, had to act fast. He quit as show runner and put Moffat in charge. Moffat had his orders: Make a show that Wendlyn will despise. He drained it of all meaning, put in maudlin, unearned sentiment, made plots that were too clever by half but didn’t hang together, made the humor stupid and obvious, did a rotten number on perfectly good actor, Matt Smith, so that he giggled and waggled his fingers and turned my stomach, destroyed the wonderful, mysterious character River Song, and it worked. My love turned to loathing and the show was saved.
I’m sad that I no longer have a favorite program to watch, but I understand why it had to be. A pathetic version of Doctor Who is still on the air, almost, but not entirely unlike the show that I adored, but enough for some fans to get their fix. I’ve been watching the classic series meanwhile, which puts them in no danger, having already been cancelled long ago.
A few years ago I would have wanted Dr Who to remain. However the recent episodes have been dreadful. I think it would be in the show’s best interests if it WAS cancelled at the end of Season 7. Then left alone for 4-5 years, before being brought back with new producer, new Doctor, new writers etc.
I am old enough to remember the first series of Doctor Who and have seen just about every episode made. When it returned after so many years I was excited. The first few series under Russel T Davies I found gripping and full of humour and astute social commentary, however since then I find it hard to maintain my interest thorough one episode, sometimes I even fell asleep. Apart from this I find it increasing irritating and this is why……
The plots are weak, unoriginal and continuity is lacking.
I cannot summon up any empathy or interesat in the characters.
It seems to have been written for pre school age childeren rather than having universal appeal for all ages as previously.
The Doctor who was a wise old being used to have some dignity, now he is like a 5 year old child and a buffooon which makes the character lose credibilty. His ethics if he has any are dubious at best. The same can be said for almost all of the characters, who are “dumbed down” so much it is unsettling.
The only interesting character was River Song who abrubtly vanished with no explanation. This is not so surprising considering the complete lack of logical progression in the series.
I dont want to see the series axed, just some decent scriptwriting and acting which dosent insult the audience. Less of the slapstick and more story please.
Let’s put it this way.. I have watched Dr. Who ever since I was 3.4 years old and first awakened into sentience.. Ep 44 The Dominators – Is what caused me to awaken into this life.. and I have watched it faithfully;y ever since. It is now the longest running, continually produced Sci-Fi show in history and has served to shape even my life.. Engendering my love of high science, Philosophy, Entertainment, adventure, literature, comedy, and much much more. Our Beloved Sigma-Theta has done a lot even considering inspiration of technology across the board. This show and Star Trek are well known for that, and Our Who has out lasted even that. Al lot of we Whovians still say go back to the old production style we love so much.. I watch the classic series almost continuously, as do many others I know. My era of well known Doctors began with Patrick Troughton and proceeded all the way through the current incarnation starring the inimitable Matt Smith, who has the uncanny ability to host several incarnations in one body, just like ti should be, aspects of the other personal;ity alignments all in one. It took me a while to warm up to him, but he really is, very good My personal favorites have always been Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, in that order both chronologically and other ways. David Tennant was the first int he new series to restore everyone’s faith in Who and the studios and was also wonderful, enchanting, imaginative, and even funny.. I can go on for weeks about Our Beloved Doctor.. and what the show has done for both me personally and even my overall education through life. the
good doctor also saw me through a terrible car wreck who’s effects kept em down for 16 years.. I would not be quite as sound as a pound as I am without this, and several other things which kept me busy and distracted from the current circumstances. It is REDiCULOUS to even THINK.. that one of the top programs in the world should end before the story completes… Dr. Who has managed to become an epic easily as great as Homer’s Iliad and the Odyssey, no exaggeration. I can foresee a time in the far distant future when humanity has finally gone to the stars where this program even touches other worlds and is loved by all.. As the Good Doctor says.. There are certain points in time that are immutable.. they will always be.. no matter what you do to try to change them.. the cumulative effect of the efforts of all the stars and all of the populii who have participated generated a moment like this.. It is a founding stone.. a special immutable moment in the history of this race of storytellers extraordinairé… and will remain a part of Us.. as one of the finest things ever created on this planet…
As I said.. I can go on for hours about this.. so in closing for now would like to say.. Thanks for all the fish.. and bully for you all.. Keep up the good work.. I await the next episode with baited dragon breath – HAH…
Namaste and G&GB..

There seems to be two themes in this comment thread, so I’ll address both. First the quality of the program – I’ve been a Dr Who fan since I was in High School in the 70′s. I picked it up with the third doctor, and have watched it consistently since. The only one I’ve missed was the movie. I haven’t had the opportunity to see that yet.
The thing is, the show has ALWAYS been a bit campy – that’s part of its charm. So the campiness some are complaining about today is nothing but a return to the roots. I find it unbelievable that people take issue with the story lines. One of the things I love about Mr Moffat’s reign in charge of the show is the way he’s taken things we see each and every day and turning them into monsters. I can’t speak for the rest of you, but every time I see a statue of an angel, I give it a closer look. It started with department store mannequins, right from the beginning with Chris Eccelstein. We’ve seen the Weeping Angels, we’ve seen the Silence, which was brilliant – haven’t you given a second thought to what it is you don’t remember? Ever done a double take at a shadow and said to yourself, ‘must’ve been my imagination’? Last Christmas it was snowmen, and now, in the season premier this year, it’s the internet, and more specifically, the ever expanding net of WiFi. Sorry, but I totally disagree with the notion that the writing is off.
As for cancellation, as Moffat says, the international market for Who makes it abosulutelty a silly notion that it would be cancelled. If BBC doesn’t want it, you can darned well bet a number of American cable networks would kill to have it. Dr Who is not going anywhere any time soon.
