Karl Pilkington/Ricky Gervais Update: An Idiot Abroad Season 3 – The End??? / Derek / No The Ricky Gervais Show Season 4? / More Audiobooks?

Ricky Gervais' Character in his new Comedy Afterlife

That’s right, I have a bumped pack of updates regarding Ricky Gervais and the K-Man Karl Pilkington himself so strap yourselves in because this is a good one!

The Ricky Gervais Show

I have a confession to make: I didn’t watch much of Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkinton’s animated creation The Ricky Gervais show. That’s not because I didn’t like it or anything, it’s solely because the shows are all based on Podcasts of the same name, which were released much earlier and I’ve listened to all of them about a thousand times over. I’m a fan. I even found a place to download all of their XFM shows, the years before the podcast where Gervais and Merchant met Karl Pilkington for the first time.

However, they stopped making regular podcasts some time ago and have since taken to an irregular and often months, if not years, apart scheduled and therefore the animated The Ricky Gervais Show had to run out of material at some point.

And it seems that point is season 3. On his Blog Ricky wrote:

So I don’t think I’m going to do a fourth series of The Ricky Gervais Show.

39 episodes is more than I’ve ever done for any other project (Yes. I know that’s pathetic but trust me.) and I don’t want to push my luck.

I think the show has steadily grown in both quality and popularity and I’d love to go out on a high so to speak. My worry is that as we’ve used up all the best material we’d have to record hours and hours of new stuff and it might ruin the naivety of the whole thing. Never say never though, like The Office. But certainly for now.

So the kind of good news is that he’s at least open to the idea of doing more animated The Ricky Gervais Show’s in the future – probably when more podcasts/audio book have been made. Who knows.

And on the podcast/audio book front, Gervais also confirmed:

We’re doing a new set of audiobooks which are filmed – not just audio. Not sure if it will be for TV or internet yet but we’ve recored one and I’m fucking buzzing about it. It’s a bit different and I can’t tell you too much about it as it’s so easy to rip off the idea. So beautifully simple. (I don’t mean Karl.)

Filmed audio books? Sounds awesome. I wonder what they’ll be about??? What do you think?

Derek

For those of you who haven’t heard or seen Ricky’s latest character (technically first – Gervais created him years ago, but up until this year had done nothing with him) I take a brief glimpse of the show (which aired in the UK as a one of pilot back in April of this year on Sky One) right here – including a trailer and outtakes.

In may of this year, I also broke the news that Derek had in fact been picked up for a full season run and the latest on the Derek front, according to Gervais: “I will be shooting another six episodes of Derek this autumn for broadcast early next year.”

So now we also have a shooting schedule and vague release date which I’m hyped about. The drawback there is that he probably means for the UK and hasn’t one mentioned whether the show will even make it over to the US yet.

An Idiot Abroad 3

An Idiot Abroad has been one of those series that has come out of nowhere and shook the world. As a fan of Karl Pilkington, when I first heard about the show I thought it was going to be good, but I had NO IDEA it was going to be that good or that funny.

The second season of the show ended not that long ago and recently, Gervais, Merchant, Pilkington and a new addition to the mix, Warwick Davis have been filming the third season. But recently commented on his blog:

Completed principle photography on the An Idiot Abroad Specials.

So far we’ve got nearly 100 hours of footage down to about 10. There are some quite amazing sequences. It’s two one-hour programmes and will air before xmas.

Awesome. And how have Karl been getting along?

He’s [Karl] particularly grumpy at the moment as he’s slogging his way through the final chapter of An Idiot Abroad.

Spoke to him on the phone today and he and Warwick are not getting on very well.
Oh… no… no one wants to see that… haha.

Obviously, no footage of An Idiot Abroad Season 3 has been made available yet but Warwick and Karl have met before…

Also sad news on the An Idiot Abroad front:

Karl and I have also decided to end An Idiot Abroad after the two specials we’re recording at the moment. Again, I think these could be the funniest adventures yet and I’d hate to outstay our welcome.

So there you have it. An Idiot Abroad Season 3 will be the last! That makes me a sad panda :(

What do you think? Will you miss the show? Are you eager to see the third season? What will the new audio books be about? Will you be tuning in to watch Derek? Please let me know in the comments section below – I’d love to hear from you!
