That’s right, the project to get the much loved Calvin and Hobbes comic strip documentary – full name Dear Mr Watterson: A Calvin & Hobbes Documentary – financed has reached and surpassed its Kickstarter goal…can you say awesomeo? Plus we have the first third of the footage of the documentary right here!
Calvin and Hobbes was a comic strip created by Bill Watterson that was syndicated between November 18th 1985 to December 31 1995 and followed the antics of an adventurous 6 year old, Calvin, and his sarcastic stuffed tiger, Hobbes.
After almost 17 years out of publication the popularity for the Calvin and Hobbes strips still remain strong [You can pick up the entire Calvin & Hobbes collection for just $91.77 btw!]. The strips remain as poignant as they day they were written and they’ve become something of a cult phenomena: reruns of the comic strip still appear in over 50 countries and almost 45 million copies of the 18 Calvin and Hobbes books have been sold [source: Wikipedia].
Therefore, it cannot come as a surprise that somebody wants to make a documentary reagrding the strip and that somebody is Joel Schroeder.
As the Kickstarter campaign page describes:
This project began as a small passion project in the fall of 2007, but with the help of Kickstarter in early 2010, the film took a huge step forward. 359 backers pledged nearly $25,000, enabling us to capture interviews with cartoonists and people in the comics industry…
As of writing this post, 1,055 backers have pledge $67,058 – $17,058 over their $50,000 target. Outstanding.
What is the documentary about?
I think Schroeder’s Kickstarter campaign page describes it best:
This film is not a quest to find Watterson, who prefers his privacy. It is an exploration to discover why his ‘simple’ comic strip made such an impact on so many readers in the 80s and 90s, and why it still means so much to us today.
So where’s the project at right now?
“We’ve been cutting together all of this footage,” the Kickstarter page continues, “and the film is now 90 minutes long, and we’re closing in on the finish line.”
So then, the documentary might not take all that long to reach our screens? I hope so. Can’t wait that long? Check out the first third of the footage right here!
What do you think? Do you love Calvin & Hobbes? Looking forward to seeing this documentary? Let me know what you think in the comments section below – I’d love to hear your opinion!
