News on the impending Judge Dredd reboot looks positive. The trailer looks awesome and there aren’t even many fanboy complaints (not even from me).
At the London Film and Comic Con last week, Dredd Writer Alex Garland shared his thoughts on a possible sequel and the potential villains therein.
Check it out.
First of all, let me share my bitter bitter congratulations to those lucky enough to be attending Comic Con this week. Especially those who will get to see a special screening of the Dredd film tomorrow. Bastards.
It’s thought that tomorrow’s screening generating early positive reviews from Uber Geeks in attendance could prove vital for the future of the Dredd franchise and according to Alex Garland, they have a specific target in mind in order to generate a sequel.
“We’ll see a sequel if the gross is above $50 million in the US,” Garland said at the London Film and Comic Con last weekend. “It’s a simple financial equation. We’re an independent movie.”
So an achievable target then it seems, if it’s accurate. At least, it is judging by the awesome trailer. And the fact they’re chancing their arm at Comic Con in front of the mose scrutinous of critics is also another good sign. They must really think they have a good movie on their hands.
As for the sequels, Garland adds, “In terms of Dark Judges, I wrote Death into this script, but it didn’t feel right for the first film.”
“I needed to have set up the city and Dredd first before taking on what is essentially a riff on the Judges. You need to know what the Judges are before you can subvert them.”
“If they want to make sequels, I’ve got a story that goes from this one into the origins of Dredd and the city,” he continued. “Then the third one has would have a strange, existential attack from the Dark Judges.”
Sounds cool huh? If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out below:
Dredd hits the cinema September 21 2012.
Based on the Trailer do you think this will reach the coveted $50 million? Are you eager to see the Dark Judges? Let me know what you think in the comments section below – I’d love to hear your opinion!
