Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be 'darker'

That’s right! Captain Amnerica: The Winter Soldier’s director has confirmed the movie will be ‘darker’ than the first and will definitely have an Ed Brubaker feel to it! Awesomeo!

Find out more about what he has to say after the jump! Be warned, however, if you have no idea about who The Winter Soldier is and don’t want the Cap sequel ruined, be wary of spoilers you find within!

Perhaps there are more deserving Cap villains in his rogue’s gallery to fill the role of antagonist in the sequel, but I’ve been a fan of The Winter Soldier character since he was introduced into the Marvel Universe in 2005 and I’m quite happy he’ll be the villain.

However, I’m even happier than the movie will have Brubaker-esque feel about it. In an interview with Huffington Post when director Anthony Russo was posed with the question regarding the movie’s connection with Ed Brubaker’s work in the Comic Books, said, “Well, we like the [story]. I can’t talk too much about specifics, that’s the way Marvel handles things. I can say in general that there’s sort of a darker, edgier sensibility at work there that we found appealing, and that is going find its way into Captain [America] in the modern day.”

A bit of a spoiler here for the uninitiated, but The Winter Solider is of course Cap’s former ‘sidekick’ Bucky who we saw fall from a train, apparently to his death, in the first movie. It is already confirmed that the Bucky actor, Sebastian Stan, will return for the role which I’m pleased with.

However, I’m not overly sure The Falcon character is needed for this movie. It’s not that I don’t like the character, it’s just I don’t think the movie needs the extra character. At this point I’m going to hold judgement, but I do hope he’ll also be included in The Avengers sequel (even in just a small way). It has also been confirmed that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter / Man on a Ledge / Real Steel actor Anthony Mackie will play Sam Wilson / The Falcon and I think he’s a fine choice to play the role.

With each and every tidbit of information we find out about this movie, I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait.

What about you? Do you think The Winter Soldier is a suitable villain for the sequel? If not, who would you prefer? Do you think the inclusion of The Falcon is a good idea? Let me know what you think in the comments section below – it’d be awesome to hear your opinion!
