Marvel Point One Teases New Guardians of the Galaxy Title?

The Guardians of the Galaxy Comic-Con Concept Art

That’s right – it looks like Marvel is teasing a new Guardians of the Galaxy title for their new Marvel Now range! Can you say Awesomeo? Check it out!

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Firstly, it hasn’t been confirmed but the front cover teaser Marvel have circulated makes it look an awful lot like it. Plus, now that The Guardians of the Galaxy has been confirmed for a 2014 release, it would make sense to push the title now. Especially considering the relative obscurity of the characters. Indeed, the decision was a somewhat strange one to anyone who is not a comic book geek (and still to some who are) but given the revealed villain at the end of the Avengers movie, leading into the next Marvel Movie Universe story arc, it came as no surprise (and Thanos has now been officially confimed for both The Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers sequel after all).

Why Relaunch the Book?

As I mentioned above, the primary reason to relaunch the Guardians of the Galaxy is to familiarise readers with the characters. To some extent, they’ve done this already in the Avengers Assemble comic book.

Why I’m hoping for more from Marvel Point One.

I love the Guardians of the Galaxy. Have done for some time. Since their formation in the Annihilation Wave books in fact. And you know what annoyed me? The fact that they just showed up Avengers Assemble out of the blue. It was like they were crammed into the book because Marvel knew the film was being released. It was like they panicked.

Why? Because in the Marvel universe Star Lord, the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, seemingly died with Nova in The Thanos Imperative trying to stop Thanos from reenting our universe (long story, go read the graphic novel – it’s awesome). I know in comic books you take a character’s death with a pinch of salt, but they never even bothered to explain just how Star Lord suddenly showed up and that’s sloppy. I expected more from Brian Bendis (who writes Avengers Assembled).

So I hope Bendis rights his mistake in this Guardians of the Galaxy title as he’s the accredited writer (with the awesome Steve McNiven on pencils).

Here’s the Marvel Teaser…
