That’s right – with the Ponds’ exit in last week’s episode “The Angels Take Manhattan” Dr Who writer and producer Steven Moffat reveals other potential fates for the Doctor’s companions! Check it out!
Alot of people knew coming into Season 7 of the cult sci-fi show that the ponds would soon be departing. It was just a matter of how and when.
After shaking viewers off the trail a little in previous episode, The Power of Three, by reaffirming the Doctor’s need for companions and indeed The Ponds’ dedication to the cause, The Angels Take Manhattan delivered the ultimate blow to the Doctor’s companions, sending the couple back in time to live their lives without him.
It was a bittersweet ending which split a lot of fans right down the middle and Moffat admitted himself that the decision as to the fate of the Ponds’ wasn’t always going to be as it was.
In an interview with Digital Spy he said, “So many times over those mad few days [of finishing the script], the fate of the Ponds changed. Alive, dead, alive, dead. Everything was wrong. Nothing felt right. Nothing felt inevitable.
…About four o’clock in the morning – with the gaspingly late script promised to the production team in a few hours – I remembered ‘The Eleventh Hour’… and the single moment we’ve been heading for, since the very beginning.”
What do you think? Were you happy with the Ponds’ exit? Would you have done it differently? If so, how? let me know in the comments section below – it’d be awesome to hear your opinion!
