Agent Coulson Will Star in Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D! What does this imply for the show?

That’s right – Agent Coulson will return to headline Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D TV show! Awesomeo!

I know how you’re feeling right now. I had the same response. Entirely confused, yet in a state of relief? Does that just about cover it?

But it’s true: Agent Coulson will headline the S.H.I.E.L.D TV show.

It was confirmed at the New York Comic-Con this past weekend by both Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige, who couldn’t speak about the character or the actor highly enough.

What was said?

In confirmation, Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon pretty much said the same thing, comments which cemented just how important the character is to the franchise.

“There was never going to be a S.H.I.E.L.D. show without Agent Phil Coulson.” [Kevin Feige]

And…

“He’s headlining the show and always was”, Whedon later confirmed.

Can’t get much more definitive than that, right?

What does that mean for the show?

This news could imply any number of things for the show. They could use some sort of alien trickery to bring him back from the dead – a plot device which, as most will already know, is very common in the comic book world – or it could turn out that the Coulson who ‘died’ in the Avengers movie was a Life Decoy Model. Or the Coulson from the show could indeed be a Life Decoy Model.

What the hell is a Life Decoy Model??? I hear you cry! Well basically, they are androids with the memory imprints of those people they are meant to be impersonating. In the comic books, these were primarily used by Nick Fury himself in dangerous situations. Writers would use these to mislead the readers into thinking he was dead. The same with Maria Hill in The Secret Invasion storyline.

It would make sense. Fury didn’t mention anything in the movie about Coulson being a Life Decoy Model when going to meet Loki head on and ultimately dying because it gave the Avengers team the impetus they needed to band together and save the world from invasion.

But what if we’re looking at this from the wrong angle?

Perhaps this show isn’t starting from the current spot in the Marvel movie timeline. Perhaps S.H.I.E.L.D is a show about what the organisation did before the Avengers were located and corralled together.

The show could just look at the everyday agents fighting secret battles against super powered threats before Iron Man kicked off the Marvel movie universe. in my eyes, that would be soooo cool.
