It's Official: Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen Return for X-men: Days of Future Past

That’s right, Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen will return to the X-Men First Class sequel, Days of Future Past to portray their roles as Professor Charles Xavier AKA Profession X and Eric Lensherr AKA Magneto respectively!

Check it out (watch out, potential spoilers)!

Days of Future Past

X-Men First Class was nothing less than a hit. I had aminor gripe with them pretty much messing with Sebastian Shaw’s power set, but I think that was because he was always one of my favourite X-Men adversaries. Regardless, the movie was fantastic.

When the news of the sequel broke and that they intended to tackle the infamous Days of Future Past storyline, I was a little skeptical and still am. I just think the story is too epic to fit in one film. I can’t see how they’re going to make it happen in a way that will satisfy fans. I mean the whole concept is overhwelming.

That said, I’m not going to write it off just yet.

Even with Matthew Vaughan deciding to leave the project. I’m a big Vaughan fan and I am sorry to see him go. I also have to wonder precisely why he went? Does he have one eye on the Star Wars films or does he believe the movie to be too epic to tackle?

I can’t believe it’s the latter for one second. After all, he wrote the screenplay. I have every confidence he knew precisely how to shoot it.

Despite his departure, his replacement Bryan Singer fills me with confidence about the project. In my eyes, he’s almost as good as Vaughan himself and he’s a filmmaker I really respect. He also has a bit of history with the X-Men movies, directing the first two of the original trilogy.

Perhaps this is what attracted the fantastcal Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen back to portray the iconic Professor Charles Xavier and Magento. He tweeted their return earlier today:

ā€œIā€™d like to officially welcome back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult to X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Also thrilled to announce Sir Ian Mckellen and Sir Patrick Stewart.ā€

Awesome, right?

So what does this mean for the movie?

I bet some people out there are thinking hang on…James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play Professor X and Magento in this franchise, right? Correct. And they still are.

The Days of Future Past storyline involves the X-Men team venturing into the future. I won’t go into much more detail regarding the rest of the plot, but suffice to say it’s a safe bet Stewart and McKellen WILL be reprising their roles.

Yes, that means both McAvoy and Stewart will be playing Professor X and Fassbender and McKellen will be portraying Magento.

What do you think?

Surprised to see their return? Looking forward to seeing them reprise their roles? Does this make the plot of X-Men Days of Future Past a little more enticing to you? Let me know in the comments below! It’d be awesome to hear your opinion!
