Jim Carrey & Adam Sandler competing for Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Movie?

The Guardians of the Galaxy Comic-Con Concept Art

The Hollywood rumour mill is churning out a couple more interesting names for Marvel’s upcoming sci-fi adventure The Guardians of the Galaxy – the one and only Jim Carrey and…Adam Sandler.

But which role are they fighting for?

What is The Guardians of the Galaxy?

I’ve written a number of articles in the past months detailing Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy and how much I love that it’s being made.

So, what’s it about? I hear you cry? Take a look a the synopsis below:

About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.

Cool, right?

Now you might be wondering where the hell does this fit in with the Marvel universe. With every Marvel movie gearing towards the 2015 Avengers sequel, you might be wondering just why would they bother with this space adventure in the middle of all this?

Well, The Guardians of the Galaxy comic book title has been synonymous with the revealed villain from the first Avengers movie for quite some time. Most of the members of The Guardians of the Galaxy have been abused or have fought Thanos in the past (check out this article here investigating just who The Guardians of the Galaxy are).

Will Thanos be involved with The Guardians of the Galaxy? I doubt a major confrontation will be made as this will most likely wait until the Avengers sequel, but this movie will at least give the perusers of the Marvel universe a glimpse at what “The Mad Titan” is really up to and how he’s affecting the Galaxy beyond Earth (read more about this in my initial article about this right here).

In summary, there is no better movie to propel the Marvel universe into the Avengers sequel.

Actor Speculation

It has been known for some time that the fantastical James Gunn has been handed the opportunity to direct the movie and that Joss Whedon fully backs him for the role. Indeed, anybody aware of The Guardians of the Galaxy comic book title and Gunn’s work will no doubt see how the movie and the director fit perfectly together.

Indeed, Gunn will be able to entwine the delicate balance of comedy, action and superheroism into a perfect weave as evidenced in his recent movie Super (if you haven’t watched it already, go do it!). His talents are similar to Joss Whedon’s in some respects, but in my opinion sometimes a little darker. Perhaps a better blend for a space adventure? I like to think so.

As for roles in the movie itself, a lot of names have been banded around. Primarily, the main character in the movie Peter Quill, Star-Lord.

In the past months I’ve heard names such as Nathan Fillion, Chuck’s own Zachary Levi and even Smallville’s own Michael Rosenbaum (to name a few) – all of which I thoroughly respect and believe can do an awesome job in the role.

Competition

Today’s speculation over Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler however is for another character entirely, I expect.

Rocket Racoon

Which character? Rocket Raccoon, that’s who.

Rocket Raccoon is an intelligent Raccoon from a planet called Halfworld – an abandoned colony for the mentally ill where animals are granted intelligence and bipedal functions in order to look after the surviving inmates. Rocket worked as Halfworld’s Ranger (chief law officer) and protected the colony from various threats.

Raccoon also fights in the Annihilation War and proves to be both fearless and a great military tactician and after proving himself in the war Star-Lord recruits him into The Guardians of the Galaxy.

As for the character himself, he’s a smart-mouthed comedy character with tendencies for extreme violence and not to be taken lightly.

I could potentially see Carrey pulling this off, but Sandler? I think not. I hope not at any rate.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movie is due to hit cinema’s 1st August 2014.

What do you think

What do you think? Can you see Carrey or Sandler getting and taking a role such as this? Would you be eager to see it? If not, who would you place in the role? Are you excited for The Guardians of the Galaxy movie? Let me know in the comments below – it’d be awesome to hear what you have to say!
