We’ve known for some time that Agent Coulson (portrayed by the fantastical Clark Gregg) will be one name from the Avengers movie, indeed the entire Marvel Universe Phase 1, to reprise his role in Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show and we thought he might be the only one.
But now there might be another.
Since discovering the news of Clark Gregg’s at the New York Comic-Con back in October, the interwebs have been awash with theories regarding how he’s actually in the show given the occurrences of The Avengers.
My theory was that the show was set BEFORE the movie and would deal with S.H.I.E.L.D. during the emergence of super-powered threats. However, it was revealed earlier this month that this would NOT be the case. S.H.I.E.L.D. will be set after the battle of New York from the movie and that begs the question – what is Agent Coulson’s role in the show? Will he serve in just flashback sequences or have the writers been a little cleverer than that?
I’m talking Life Decoy Models. A popular device used in the comic books, particularly for Nick Fury. Life Decoy Models are basically androids that are made to look and act like the person they’re ‘decoying’. At least that’s another theory being banded around.
But let’s get back to Agent Hill.
Agent Maria Hill rose to prominence in the comic books and within the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Nick Fury had to make himself scarce after the Secret War storyline. Hill was his chosen successor and was a particularly decent ‘hard-ass’-type character for the storyline’s to come (most notably Civil War).
When the TV series was announced, a lot of people figured Maria Hill would have a definitive role to play, but nothing regarding the character’s inclusion had even been mentioned by the S.H.I.E.L.D. powers that be.
In an interview with I Am Rouge Smulders stated:
The commitments to [How I Met Your Mother] don’t affect it [her inclusion in S.H.I.E.L.D.]. And I can’t really say, but there are definite talks about it.
Cool, right? Or is it? If there’s no clash between the two series she’s working on, does that mean her role on S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t a series regular? Just a re-occurring guest star perhaps? Either way I’m hyped about it.
And regardless of her S.H.I.E.L.D. inclusion, Smulders will be returning to the Marvel movie universe, reprising her role as Maria Hill in the 2014 production of Captain America: The Winter Soldier alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson.
Awesome stuff, right?
