Paul Giamatti in Talks to Play Rhino in Amazing Spider-Man 2

Paul Giamatti in talks to play Rhino

It looks like the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is expanding – Paul Giamatti in official talks for the role of Rhino. Read more right here.

Two Villains of Doom

Firstly, I’d like to say that I lobe the Rhino character. I think he’s one of Spider-Man’s many unsung villains and I’m really hyped to see that he’ll be appearing in the sequel.

I just have one problem.

The too many villains thing.

Raimi did it in the third movie of the original Spider-Man trilogy and absolutely destroyed the movie. The story goes: he wanted Sandman, but fans wanted Venom. So he tried to include both, with disastrous results. Too much story was crammed into the movie and that left a lot of plot holes and basically caused the movie to stink up the cinema.

I hope that director Marc Webb has learnt from Raimi’s mistakes and the script for the second movie can handle two villains.

The second villain in the movie of course is Max Dillon – Electro, which will be played by Django Unchained star Jamie Foxx (as we confirmed way back when) which I really think is an inspired choice. I really like the Electro character and Foxx can more than pull the role off.

If Rhino is indeed the second villain of the movie, I think the two vastly different challenges of strength and electricity will be an interesting combination for Spidey to take on.

As for future villains, it has also already confirmed that Dane DeHaan will be Harry Osbourne, future Green Goblin, so perhaps that’s what they’ll build up to ready for the third instalment of the movie? It’ll be interesting to see which direction they’ll go with that one.

Also, they’ve cast Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Peter’s second love interest after Gwen Stacy, leading many fans to speculate as to the fate of Emma Stone’s character in the second movie. Fans already know Gwen Stacy dies in the comic books – but how will the film handle her character?

Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due for release 2nd May 2014.

In Talks

The fact that Paul Giamatti is in talks to portray Rhino in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel was announced yesterday by Sony and it would be of no great surprise if he were to get the role. In his May 2011 appearance on Conan, he stated his love of the character even back then, He looks like a rhino!” Giamatti said. “Why would I not want to do that? He would run into stuff real fast and smash into it…I think I would be the best Rhino possible.”

Maybe Sony watched the show.

What do you think?

Do you think Giamatti is a good choice for the villain? Are you concerned by too many villains in the movie? Let me know in the comments below – it’d be awesome to hear your opinion!
