Joss Whedon tells us what S.H.I.E.L.D. will focus on and talks about Cobie Smulders Involvement

Joss Whedon’s live-action television series based on Marvel’s clandestine government set-up S.H.I.E.L.D. is going to be awesome. This isn’t even up for debate.

The question is, just how awesome? Here, Whedon gives us the feel of the show and discusses Cobie Smulders potential role as Maria Hill in the series.

Okay, so what do we know so far?

Just to bring everyone who hasn’t been following the show’s progression, here’s where we’re up to.

• The characters have been cast and will include: Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, along with newcomers Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons, Iain De Caestecker Agent Leo Fitz, Chloe Bennet as Skye and Brett Dalton as Agent Grant.
• Yeah, you read that right. Clark Greeg WILL be back. He’s the star of the show. There has been much speculation regarding his revival. The best guess is the LMD theory, which S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents have utilised numerous times within comic books.
• The series will take place after the Avengers movie.
• The pilot for the show has already been filmed and production has wrapped. Now ABC must decide whether they want to pick the series up. Given the popularity of the Avengers, I would imagine this is a given but the television industry isn’t well known for its common sense in regards to shows, particularly Joss Whedon shows (RIP Firefly. Sadface)

So what will be the tone of the show?

A lot of people have been speculation what the show will be about and just how Agent Coulson is even in the show, but there has been very little talk regarding what the tone of the show will be.

In a recent interview with the great man himself, TV Line managed to tackle the subject.

I’m excited about the show because it’s a very hopeful show. It’s not about murder, and it’s not about crime, and it’s not people looking into their own belly buttons. It’s about people who are trying to help each other, and that’s one of the things I loved about comic books. They had costumes and the villains were cool [but] they stood for something, and I like doing a show that does that… We’re trying very hard to be true to [Marvel's] ethos and also to the structure of their universe. So it is definitely a Marvel show.

Then, in the same interview, the subject of Cobie Smulders reprising her role as Maria Hill was brought up.

[How I Met Your Mother] will permit very little involvement for [Cobie Smulders], but if we can get a hold of her any time, we will…Right now, I want to involve people in the characters that we’ve created for the show, and then we’ll worry about [the other stuff].

You look for the best person for the role, and if that person is someone you already know, then great. That’s some work done for you. But as much as I would love to — and once did [Much Ado About Nothing]— make a movie just with my friends, you always want to increase the family.
