Neill Blomkamp: ‘Elysium’ Almost Completed, Next Movie in Development

Neill Blomkamp says Elysium almost done, next movie in production

You read the title right – Neill Blomkamp says his follow up to the awesome District 9, ‘Elysium’ is almost complete and what’s more, his next project is already in pre-production.

Sci-Fi Awesomeness

District 9 came out of nowhere and slapped me across the face. That’s the best way I can describe it. I went into the cinema expecting a standard Hollywood take on a sci-fi movie and prepared myself to be disappointed.

As a life-long geek, I’m jaded to the recent failings of Hollywood in terms of the science fiction movie.

But District 9 was different. It was fresh. It was original (although certain parts of the story reminded me of Alien Nation). It had a message – it wasn’t a mindless romp like Independence Day (not that I dislike the movie). It had distinct and frightening parallels with human history, more notably the Apartheid in Blomkamp’s native South Africa.

Will Elysium have the same impact?

The short answer is: I doubt it. I think his second movie might get the Hollywood treatment in some respects, I just hope Blompkamp sticks to his guns and is stubborn about the direction he wants to take the movie in. After all, he knows what he’s doing. He can and has delivered an awesome and very profitable sci-fi flick.

I just hope he gets to do the movie how he wants to do it, which in Hollywood is asking a lot.

BTW, you can pick up District 9 on Blu-Ray for just $12.04 these days. If you haven’t seen the movie, I strongly suggest you do.

In an interview with The Province earlier this month, he talks about the movie.

In reference to Elysium being pretty much completed and just waiting for its August 9th release, he said “It’s kind of weird that it sits on a shelf and doesn’t come out until August 9th but I think a summer release is fantastic for the film.”

“Elysium is basically done at the end of February,” Blomkamp confirmed. “I have some straggling VFX shots that go into April but it’s almost done. The stuff looks absolutely amazing.”

Matt Damon in Elysium

Elysium will star Matt Damon and Jodie Foster in a story set in 2159, where the very wealthy reside in a space station orbiting Earth and the poor residing in poverty on the ruined Earth.

The narrative starts when Matt Damon’s character, Max, sets off on a mission to bring equality to the two polarized worlds.

Sounds awesome, right?

As I mentioned previously, this movie is set to hit the cinema’s in the US on 9th August and 20th September in the UK.

The Next Project

So what is this mysterious project that Blomkamp will tackle next? Another sci-fi movie that’s what. A sci-fi comedy going by the name of “Chappie”.

Blomkamp will re-team with screenwriter wife Tatchell (who also worked on the District 9 script with her husband) and will travel back to Johannesburg for principal photography.

And for now, that’s all we know about the project.

I’m not a massive fan of sci-fi comedy. There are obvious a few exceptions to the rule – Red Dwarf and Spaceballs immediately spring to mind – but on the whole they just leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

What do you think? Will Elysium be just as good as District 9? What do you think of the idea of Blomkamp’s next project, ‘Chappie’? Let me know in the comments below – it’d be awesome to hear your opinion on the matter!

“I think his second movie might get the Hollywood treatment in some respects” – oh, you have nothing to be worried about.

MRC independently financed the film which netted Blomkamp full creative control. It’s one of the reasons why Sony decided to go all-in on the movie alone when Blomkamp was shopping it to studios back in 2010.

Anyway, I’ve been able to speak to a few people who attended the early cut of the movie in Cali back in June 2012 – they all had nothing but great things to say about it, and that was even with the film containing virtually NO finished effects while also implementing a temp-score.

I think it tells you the confidence level Sony has with this movie that they moved it from a dreaded early spring release to almost the same exact weekend D9 was slated in back in 2009.

This movie is going to rock. ;-)
