WWE’s Dave Bautista will be Drax the Destroyer in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

Dave Bautista Cast as Drax

That’s right – WWE’s very own Dave Bautista has been cast for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy!

I had so much hope for this movie.

I love The Guardians of the Galaxy comic books and I was hyped when the movie was announced. Then we got the rather awesome James Gunn to helm the project and Parks and Recreation’s Chris Pratt to lead the cast.

There was even promise of Game of Thrones and Conan Star Jason Mamoa in the role of Drax the Destoryer. He apparently travelled to London for casting, but it didn’t pay off and soon after news had broken that he hadn’t secured the role.

I was a little upset, but I still had hope for the project.

Today, that hope was dashed. WWE’s own Dave Bautista has now been cast as Drax the Destroyer.

The news was reported by Hollywood Reporter yesterday and after reading the article, a cold chill shot down my spine.

Is this REALLY the man for the role? Yes and No – allow me to play devil’s advocate for a second.

I haven’t seen Bautista act, but if it’s like pretty much every other wrestler who’s ever attempted to act then it’s most likely going to be a mixture of laughable and pathetic.

Could this be different? Yes. Drax the Destroyer is a man of few words and if the actor’s job for this role is basically to stand there looking intimidating then Bautista definitely has that skill in his locker.

If the role requires a lot of dialogue, then we’re all pretty much screwed.

That said, someone in Hollywood must see something in him. Last Year he appeared in the movie The Man with the Iron Fists and we’ll next see him in the highly anticipated third Riddick outing alongside Vin Diesel, which should be interesting.

What do you think?

I’m still not 100% behind this. I’ll have to see it and if he pulls it off, give him credit then. But now? Now I’m still not sure I like this.

Do you like this casting? Do you think Bautista will do a good job? Let me know in the comments below – it’ll be awesome to hear your opinion!
