Star Wars Movie News – or more accurately – rumour alert!
Yesterday the interwebs were awash with rumours that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing a Sith Lord in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII movie.
Today, those rumours have been quashed. Or have they?
You guys remember all the controversy around Cumberbatch’s character in JJ Abrams Star Trek: Into Darkness, right? For an age before the movie, every geek out there was entirely convinced that Cumberbatch was playing Khan during the months leading up to the movie’s premiere. Abrams, Cumberbatch and pretty much everyone else involved in the movie denied it so much that they almost convinced everyone that it wasn’t the case.
Turns out they were lying.
So what does this have to do with these Star Wars rumours? Nothing or everything, but it leads to the question: who can you trust any more?
Following the rumours, representatives for Cumberbatch quickly formed a response and published it via New York Daily News denying the whole thing (where have we heard that before):
There is no truth to the rumour Benedict has been cast in Star Wars. I think the rumours are circling because JJ and Benedict have just recently had a wonderful time working together on Star Trek.
So bare face lie or genuine denial? Part of me thinks the denial came so fast that the rumour HAS to be true, because a) they were looking for the rumours and b) if he wasn’t involved, wouldn’t his people want the rumours to circulate a little more in order to raise the profile of their client?
Who knows – what do you think? Is this a genuine denial? Or is it another Hollywood little white lie? Would you want to see Cumberbatch as a Sith Lord? Let me know what you think in the comments below – it’ll be awesome to hear your opinion!
